Reconstruction of Ostia 1st century BCE?
Ages ago I stumbled across a website which described what it would have been like arriving in Ostia as a Celtic merchant.
It was exactly what I needed but I forgot to bookmark it and now I can’t find it no matter how many google search terms I try.
Can anyone point me at the right sort of thing or give me some deep background info.
There is a description of first century Ostia (and indeed much description of first century Rome) in Philip Matyszak’s book Ancient Rome on Five Denarii a Day. Whilst the text is not available online, the book is quite recent and is widely available – it would certainly be obtainable readily through any good bookshop or library. The author (who teaches out of Cambridge University) has a light and humorous touch, but he is teriffically well-informed and his book is filled with fascinating and obscure observations – and it is written from the personal standpoint of the ancient tourist, which is the sort of thing you are looking for.
As for websites, an extremely thorough source would be the following, in which there is much of interest to the more experienced classical scholar as well as the general reader:

For an interesting insight into an ongoing excavation at Ostia Antica, try the following website:

I hope that this will be of interest and help to you.
Enjoy!

There are shades of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & Ryan Adams, to name a few, both in the lyrics & the music, but with Roddy’s own style glazed nicely over the top. His guitar, piano and harmonica-driven lyrical reflections impact on all who hear them and have subsequently earned him much respect from fans and critics… |
