How to Keep Your Leather Diary in Top Condition
A diary or a personal journal is your most intimate confidante. You can confidently share your secrets with it knowing that your personal leather diary will not talk to someone. You can also use your leather journal as a tool to vent your hidden anger, angst, and aspirations. Writing the things that bother you can help in easing the tensions and emotions that you are suppressing. Because your diary is very valuable, you should protect its leather cover in order to keep it in good condition. So here are some useful tips on how to take care of your leather diary or journal.
One of the first things that you have to do is to find a suitable storage space for your leather diary or leather journal. Keeping your diary in the right place is the key to protecting the leather cover. You must never store your diary in a drawer located in a humid room. The humidity could easily dry out the leather. Your diary’s cover therefore may develop cracks and breaks which are very difficult to repair. Once the leather cover develops a crack, then the damage will stay there forever. You must also avoid placing your leather journal in a drawer together with ink bottles, pins, and other small sharp office supplies. Ink can be very difficult to remove while sharp objects can damage the integrity of the leather.
When cleaning your leather diary or leather journal, it would be best to use dry cotton cloth or any soft non shedding cloth material. This is good if you will only remove dust and dirt. If the dirt can not be removed easily then you can use a slightly damp cloth and carefully wipe away the dirt. Make sure not to wash the leather cover because water can damage leather. After wiping the leather cover with a damp cloth, use a hand towel to completely dry the damp area. In most cases, this method of cleaning leather bound diaries will be enough.
If your leather diary or leather journal has a stain, then you need to use a very gentle moisturizing soap in removing the stain. Just apply the soap over the stained area or rub a damp cloth on the soap. Then gently stroke the stained area until a good lather forms. Continue wiping until the stain is removed. Again, never wash the leather cover on water. You can remove the soap by using dry cloth. Make sure to remove all traces of soap because suds can damage the surface of the leather cover. After removing the stain, you can apply commercial leather conditioner in order to restore the original moisture content of the leather.
