Robotic Led

I need some advice on microcontrollers and programming them?
Ive been looking for a cheap microcontroller to get started with robotics, but i cant seem to get any information on them. I dont understand exactly how one uploads a program to the microcontroller.
i understand you can buy an $800 programmer, but i really dont have the money to waste on that. Is it possible to upload it via usb port or something? if anyone has a tutorial that actually explains the uploading process step by s tep, i would greatly appreciate it. (or if you could just explain it to me!)
btw i found this, and thought i might buy it. Is this one good/bad? would it work with a led cube that i want to program? https://www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/BASICStampModules/tabid/134/ProductID/1/List/1/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost,ProductName
thanks!
That’s a lot of questions. I design boards using a few different product families depending on the needs. Checkout sparkfun.com to see a lot of different things. They have downloadable datasheets, circuit schematics and more with a lot of the products. They also provide links to other sites in many cases. Some of the things they carry are open hardware designs that use open source software. In that case they are just providing kits or assembled boards. You definitely want assembled boards if they use little surface mount components. The equipment costs and practice needed to solder those parts in will put you in the nuthouse. Study hard. You can make some money doing this type of thing.
BTW – You might as well learn C. The different chips with builtin basic are not going to have the exact same basic language. The basic interpreter uses a chunk of the program memory and it’s slower than C or assembly language. Just a few of many reasons. Learn about the tradeoffs between C and basic for more reasons.
