Stretchable Book

Do you hide the cover of your book, in public, when you don’t want anyone to see what you’re reading?
I used to read a lot of romantic relationship
books, (He’s Just Not That Into You, is a
great one– the coauthor also wrote for
Sex and The City), and I hid the covers.
I’m not proud of that, now. But at the time,
I thought my interests were very personal.
Ever hide a book cover? How’d you hide
it, (I always bought stretchable book covers),
and WHY did you hide it?
Never, no matter what I read which is often more than one book at a time I do not care who sees it/them. At times it has opened the way for someone to start a conversation.
While in a clinic in Bernkastle Keus, Germany I read a good variety of books and one in particular attracted a lot of comments. It was “The Body Language of Sex, Power and Aggression” which was in English. The only word that many of the people were able to understand was “Sex” so I did get a lot of strange looks and comments. I was there for nearly a year after being paralyzed and when I was reading that particular book, I was not very functional and had to either use a wheel chair or for short times I would use a walker. I also had very limited use of my hands and could not have hid the cover if I had wanted to. I would manage to open the book and turn the pages to read but between therapies when I was slowly rolling from one therapy to the next, it was on the wheel chair table where anyone could see it. Half of the people who commented about the ’sex’ book did not believe I was reading about body language when I told them what the book was about so I ended up with a reputation as the ‘American with the sex book’ which was amusing because I was the only American in the clinic, book or not.
Edit: I was thinking about the time in the clinic in Bernkastle, I have been in others many times since then so I do not do that often, and the book. Thanks for reminding me of one of the few good memories that went with the experiance. A couple people made it past the Sex to the Power and Aggression and did comment that it looks like I am reading about S&M.

If you get comments and are embarassed, just say you write book reviews. I did write them for a while (freelance) along with a regular colomn and had to read some books that the editor wanted reviewed that I would not have chosen myself. You never know why someone is reading something.
